What is the difference between merit-based and need-based aid?

Merit-based aid requires specific academic criteria, such as grades, test scores, essays, and activities. An example of a merit-based award would be the MDC Honors College Scholarship because it is based on academic excellence and achievements.

Need-based aid is determined by a student’s financial situation and need.  An example of need-based aid would be the Federal Pell Grant.
